She expected nothing but the best from you. What was really fantastic about her was the fact that she was very inspirational, but she was tough as nails. Q: Tell me about one of your mentors and how that person developed your artistry?Ī: My great mentor/teacher was Martha Graham. It’s because all of those things were satisfying an incredible craving from me to be a complete human being.
When I started dancing, it felt so right, I felt at home. I didn’t realize it was happening at the time. When you’re 17 years old, and you fall in love, and the person you’re in love with isn’t in love with you, you don’t understand that.ĭancing was a way for me to make myself over, in my own image, so that I could believe I’m beautiful, I’m worth something. I fell in love with somebody, and it was an unrequited love. I was just coming out of a very damaging relationship. Q: When and why did you decide to dedicate yourself to dancing?Ī: On reflection, after many, many years of doing it, what I found in dance was an aesthetic where I could believe I was beautiful. It’s like planting seeds and not knowing what’s going to come up. The most rewarding thing is to see how people develop in unexpected ways. Sometimes it happens in the most unexpected way that is very lovely. Q: What’s one of the most rewarding aspects?Ī: The most rewarding aspect, of course, is seeing somebody flower, is seeing somebody self-actualize. You see all the things actually that they can’t see. As a teacher, you want to maximize their potential. The hardest part about teaching is to get that person over that hurdle of not trusting themselves or going that extra mile. I’d say 99 percent of the time, your body wants to do it, but there’s that 1 percent of the time that your body doesn’t want you to do it. You are basically asking your body to do impossible things. Question: What’s the most challenging aspect of teaching dance?Īnswer: The most challenging aspect is the physical aspect because as much as you want to be a dancer, it’s all based on physicality.
IndyStar spoke with the Indianapolis dance company’s artistic director about his process, how dancing satiated his “craving to become a complete human being” and why people who know nothing about dance would do well to watch a performance. In 2011, former Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard named April 2 David Hochoy Day. Since 1982 he has been a member of its faculty and has racked up many teaching credits at places such as Tokyo and Dublin. In 1980 he joined the prestigious Martha Graham Dance Company. But at age 20 he decided to take on dance instead. Born in Trinidad, Hochoy would later attend McGill University in Montreal with eyes on becoming a doctor.
